At the recent MWC 2026 conference in Barcelona, Orange CEO Christel Heydemann delivered a keynote address emphasizing that telecom operators must evolve into architects of trust during the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). As AI becomes integrated into our daily lives, telcos must do more than just provide connectivity; they need to build a reliable digital environment.

Heydemann stressed that AI is no longer merely a tool but is quickly becoming the engine driving our economies and societies. While this promises tremendous advancements, it also poses potential threats. She likened the situation to a “vertiginous prospect” and underscored the importance of creating a digital world that is not one of chaos and risk.

In this quest for a secure digital ecosystem, Heydemann pointed out operators’ current pivotal role. Telecom companies run the infrastructure that supports the digital economy, connecting much of the global population and handling enormous data traffic. For instance, the industry recently set a record by transmitting one petabyte of data in less than a second, comparable to all Netflix traffic in Europe within a second.

Despite their vast network capabilities, telcos are not reaping the financial rewards proportionate to their contributions. With the technology sector valued at over $30 trillion, European telcos make up less than 10% and show minimal growth. Therefore, solving this imbalance is not just a financial concern but also a strategic imperative in the AI era.

Heydemann detailed a necessary role shift for telcos, which involves architecting a trusted environment built on three main pillars. First, telecoms must ensure protection by acting as an active shield for the digital world, focusing on privacy, cybersecurity, and data protection. Second, they must provide resilience and continue service amid unpredictability through efficient system design and recovery measures. Third, turning trust into a competitive edge is essential because trust is becoming a core performance driver in technology.

She concluded her address by citing Europe’s strong position as one of the most fiber-connected continents, urging a regulatory environment that aligns with AI ambitions. Heydemann expressed that telcos now have a historical opportunity—and responsibility—to lead in trusted technology, not only as technology providers but as shapers of a trustworthy digital landscape.

Orange’s CEO envisions a collaborative effort to shape a trusted digital world in which we are eager to belong, driven by strong leadership and strategic planning.
