AT&T has teamed up with the lamppost EV charging start-up Voltpost to bring curbside charging to Detroit. This collaboration aims to retrofit lampposts into modular charging infrastructures, enhancing access in urban and residential areas lacking adequate home charging facilities. Such a move represents a fresh approach to addressing the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.
The partnership aims to boost charger reliability using IoT connectivity, enhancing the overall charging experience. Joe Mosele, Vice President, AT&T Connected Solutions, remarked, “We are dedicated to fostering innovation and supporting emerging tech. As cities move toward a more sustainable future, enabling cities to scale their charging networks with existing infrastructure and advanced connectivity is a game-changer.” This highlights the collaborative effort to leverage existing city infrastructure, potentially reducing costs and expediting deployment timelines.
Deploying curbside charging remains uncommon in the United States. Nevertheless, for those unable to charge at home, this initiative could prove invaluable. It signifies a step toward integrating charging solutions into everyday cityscapes, making EV adoption more practical for urban dwellers.
Voltpost has announced plans for installation across Michigan, New York, and Illinois, signaling a strategic push to expand these innovative charging solutions beyond Detroit. The deployment aim aligns with cities’ growing emphasis on sustainable infrastructure and supports communities transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
Meanwhile, AT&T has committed to supporting environmental goals through its gigaton goal. The company aims to help businesses reduce one billion metric tons of CO2 by 2035. Connectivity-backed solutions like fiber, 5G, and IoT technologies are pivotal in achieving this vision.
