Equinix has unveiled plans to develop a new International Business Exchange data center, named SG6, in Singapore. This massive USD $260 million investment aims to bolster Singapore’s data center capacity while aligning with the nation’s sustainability goals, including the Green Plan 2030. Designed for compute-intensive tasks like artificial intelligence, SG6 incorporates renewable energy and cutting-edge liquid cooling technology to enhance energy efficiency.
The integration of SG6 into Equinix’s global network will offer businesses low-latency, high-bandwidth connections. This setup is crucial for executing artificial intelligence workflows efficiently. Singapore’s focus on AI-driven innovation emphasizes the need for robust digital infrastructure, and the expansion of data center capacity plays a pivotal role in this journey. Technologies such as quantum computing, blockchain, and edge computing are driving this demand for increased processing power.
Additionally, Equinix demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability. The company has a renewable energy power purchase agreement with Sembcorp Industries in Singapore. SG6 will employ innovative solutions like energy-efficient cooling systems and rainwater harvesting. The facility’s liquid cooling technology will efficiently handle high-power applications, optimizing data center operations beyond traditional air cooling systems.
Further, Equinix collaborates with academic and industry partners to explore sustainable solutions. Its partnerships in private and public sectors, including initiatives with the National University of Singapore, have focused on alternative power supply systems and digital infrastructure sustainability.
Aileen Chia, Deputy Chief Executive at IMDA, endorsed the SG6 project and the role data centers play in sustaining Singapore’s digital economy. “Equinix’s commitment to sustainability is aligned with our Green DC Roadmap,” she stated, highlighting the importance of energy efficiency and green energy in transforming the digital landscape.
Pei Sheng Goh, Vice President of Digital Industry Singapore, emphasized the growth opportunities in Southeast Asia’s digital economy and the advantages that SG6 would bring to local and regional businesses. These enhancements are set to drive economic value and meet increasing computational demands.
Yee May Leong, Managing Director of Equinix Singapore, declared SG6 as a significant benchmark in digital and AI transformation. The demand for more capacity continues to rise with the growth of compute-intensive workloads, and SG6’s latest sustainability innovations support this expansion responsibly.
Slated for completion in Q1 2027, SG6 will provide 20 MW of capacity when fully operational. Equinix has already achieved 100% renewable energy coverage for its Singapore data centers, aiming for climate neutrality by 2030. With 268 data centers across 73 metros in 34 countries, and a strong presence in the Asia-Pacific region, Equinix remains a vital player in the sustainable digital infrastructure space.
