Nokia and Telefónica Germany have signed a five-year contract extension. The agreement aims to modernize Telefónica’s national radio access network and accelerate the rollout of 5G. By 2030, this project supports Germany’s digital transformation ambitions. The contract strengthens the collaboration between the companies and introduces Cloud RAN capabilities and AI-driven management tools from Nokia.
With this deal, Nokia will deploy its energy-efficient, AI-capable AirScale RAN portfolio. This includes Habrok Massive MIMO radios, Pandion multiband remote radio heads, and AirScale small cells. These components aim to enhance indoor and outdoor coverage while boosting energy efficiency and 5G performance. Telefónica will also integrate Nokia’s latest baseband systems to improve network reliability.
The expansion incorporates Nokia’s Interleaved Passive Active Antenna (IPAA+) solution, streamlining site design and speeding up 5G deployment. Maintenance and network optimization services are also part of the agreement. Telefónica continues using Nokia’s MantaRay NM platform for comprehensive network management over its core, radio, and transport layers. This step aligns with both companies’ goal of advancing Telefónica’s network with AI-driven automation.
Matthias Sauder, Director of Networks at O2 Telefónica, highlighted Nokia’s trusted role in enhancing customer network experiences. The contract extension reflects their mutual commitment to advancing 5G and creating a more connected and sustainable Germany. Nokia’s CEO expressed pride in this renewed partnership, noting how it will bolster performance, efficiency, and user experience across Telefónica’s 5G network. Enabled by Nokia’s anyRAN software, AirScale baseband, and autonomous platforms, Telefónica is well-positioned for competitiveness in the AI-driven future.
