Deutsche Telekom and Softbank in a share-swap deal
In a significant shake-up that reinforces the German group’s transatlantic emphasis, Deutsche Telekom has reached a $7 billion share-swap agreement with SoftBank Group to raise its stake in T-Mobile US. In addition, Deutsche Telekom has sold its Dutch subsidiary. As a consequence of the two transactions, Deutsche Telekom’s share in T-Mobile US will increase to 48.4 percent, moving it closer to its aim of gaining direct control of the $170 billion US telecoms operator. In exchange, SoftBank will receive cash and a 4.5 percent interest in Deutsche Telekom, creating a direct shareholding link.

NEC expands its partnership with AWS
NEC has stated that it will broaden its relationship with AWS to include 5G and digital governance. NEC aims to create an “end-to-end 5G offering” by integrating their cloud-native open 5G core with AWS’ cloud and edge services. According to the company, its unified platform stack will be complemented by these integration services, allowing clients to swiftly and efficiently construct 5G networks at scale. Furthermore, the firm is now an AWS Government Competency Partner, putting them in a stronger position to expedite digital transformation initiatives for the Japanese government.

Apple to hold a product launch event
Apple has set September 14, 2021 as the date for its annual launch event, during which new iPhones are likely to be unveiled. During the event, dubbed ‘California Streaming,’ Apple is likely to unveil four new iPhone 13 models, including the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, as well as AirPods 3 and Apple Watch Series 7. The event will be livestreamed on Apple’s website from Apple Park in Cupertino, California. The showcase will also be available on the Apple TV app and will be broadcast on the company’s YouTube channel.

AT&T has struck a deal with OneWeb
AT&T has entered into an agreement to deploy OneWeb satellite connections to serve corporate clients in remote regions. AT&T stated that it will use the OneWeb service to improve connectivity for enterprise, SME and government clients, as well as link its own mobile towers in challenging and under-served areas. The firm did not go into great detail about the specific regions, but did indicate that OneWeb will be capable of providing service in Alaska and the northern states of the United States later this year. OneWeb now has a network of 288 satellites, which it plans to expand to 648 by the end of 2022.
