Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, a prominent Indonesian telecoms operator, has announced a strategic partnership with national airline Garuda Indonesia. This collaboration aims to infuse various digital technologies into Garuda’s operations to “enhance operational quality, optimize ancillary revenue, and personalize passenger experiences.” Initial benefits include optimizing flight services through digitalization and creating seamless travel planning for passengers.

The specifics of the technologies being implemented remain undisclosed. However, Indosat’s CEO, Vikram Sinha, remarked, “Armed with the latest technological innovations developed by Indosat, we are committed to supporting the growth of every industry sector.” He emphasized the collective vision shared with the Indonesian Government to enhance Indonesia’s global reputation, particularly in aviation and tourism sectors.

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy backs this partnership, viewing it as a crucial element in boosting Indonesia’s aviation and tourism industries. Minister Sandiaga Uno stated, “This partnership marks a significant moment for Indonesia’s aviation and tourism sectors. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, Indonesia will not only elevate the tourist experience but also create new economic opportunities that will drive sustainable growth.”

This partnership signifies Indosat’s strategic move from a telco to an integrated techco. Since merging with CK Hutchison in early 2022, Indosat has prioritized new technologies, such as AI, to venture into diverse industries from aviation to agriculture. “If you look at the telco space, the industry is growing four or five per cent. But if you look at the digital economy, the industry is growing 18 per cent. This is where we want to play,” Sinha highlighted in a media briefing last year.
