The United Kingdom is set to enhance its semiconductor research capabilities significantly, following the government’s decision to join forces with the European Union’s Chips Joint Undertaking (JU). This collaboration marks a pivotal step in the UK’s efforts to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor arena, promising to inject new energy into its research and innovation sectors.
The Chips Joint Undertaking, with a hefty budget of approximately €11 billion, aims to propel the EU and its partners to the forefront of semiconductor technology. This initiative is supported by a mix of EU funding and contributions from member states and the private sector. It is designed to foster advancements across several key areas, including the development of new semiconductor technologies, quantum chips, professional training, and the enhancement of access to financial resources.
Within this framework, the UK’s involvement is specifically geared towards semiconductor technology research and innovation, benefiting from a substantial €1.3 billion funding pool provided by the EU’s Horizon Europe scheme. The UK’s entry into this endeavor was facilitated by a financial commitment from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, pledging £5 million for the current year, followed by an additional £30 million over the subsequent two years.
This strategic partnership allows UK firms to compete for crucial funding opportunities. The Chips JU plans to release calls for funding proposals in areas that align closely with the UK’s expertise, including semiconductor applications in automotive technology and open source RISC-V architecture.
Jari Kinaret, the executive director of Chips JU, expressed enthusiasm for the UK’s participation, highlighting the anticipated contributions to the European microelectronics ecosystem and the broader scientific community’s quest for innovation and excellence in semiconductor technologies.
Echoing this sentiment, UK Technology Minister Saqib Bhatti underscored the significance of this collaboration for Britain’s semiconductor strategy. By joining the Chips JU, the UK not only secures a vital role in directing future research and funding efforts but also reinforces its commitment to advancing semiconductor science and maintaining a competitive edge in the global supply chain.
This move is part of the UK’s broader National Semiconductor Strategy, which includes investing £1 billion over the next decade to bolster the semiconductor sector, safeguard against supply chain disruptions, and ensure national security. The strategy also encompasses the establishment of new semiconductor R&D centers and training programs, underscoring the UK’s dedication to research and development, despite the high costs and potential profits associated with production.
This partnership with the EU’s Chips Joint Undertaking represents a significant milestone for the UK, enhancing its capacity for innovation and securing its stance as a global leader in semiconductor research and development.
