A Verizon network outage impacted customers across the United States on Monday, leaving many unable to make or receive calls. The carrier has not yet publicly identified a cause. Reports extended beyond known outages caused by Hurricane Helene in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.
According to DownDetector, provided by Ookla, reports of issues began spiking mid-morning Eastern Time across more than a dozen states. Over 1.6 million reports were collected from areas such as California and New York. The most concentrated regions included Chicago, Phoenix, Denver, and Seattle, each recording over 20,000 customer issues.
At 11:48 a.m. ET on Monday, Verizon acknowledged the network issue on X, formerly known as Twitter. Multiple users reported their phones were stuck in “SOS” mode. A Verizon spokesperson stated, “We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue.”
Later, at 5:04 p.m., the company posted an update: “Verizon engineers are making progress on our network issue and service has started to be restored. We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience some of our customers experienced today. We continue to work around the clock to fully resolve this issue.”
By 7:18 p.m. ET, Verizon announced that the outage had been resolved but did not specify the root cause. The company advised customers still experiencing issues to restart their devices. “We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience,” the company reiterated.
