The Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy has made a significant technological leap by partnering with Samsung Electronics and KT Corporation. This collaboration aims to establish a private 5G network for its ‘Smart Naval Port’ project. This marks the first deployment of a private 5G network at a Korean Naval base, set to enhance base defense and support battleship and base operations.

Samsung and KT will supply the base with smart, AI-enabled connectivity solutions. This will involve establishing a comprehensive Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure. The system will incorporate 13 distinct technologies, such as uncrewed vehicle operation and advanced armory and ammunition depot management.

Furthermore, the project’s digital twin aspect will play a crucial role in decision-making. It will gather vital information to help manage and operate the naval base efficiently. The advanced network will allow real-time video control of operational forces, vehicles, surveillance cameras, and drones, optimizing intelligent security monitoring.

Jun-Ho Kim, KT’s senior vice president and head of its public customer business unit, stated, “KT will contribute to establishing a standardized system for the Republic of Korea Navy through the Smart Naval Port project. We look forward to laying the foundation for the ‘Smart Naval Port’ which will improve its capability to support battleship and naval base operations.”

Samsung will implement its private network 5G SA Compact Core, including indoor and outdoor radio solutions and network management software. These will operate on the mid-band (n79, 4.7GHz) spectrum, frequently used for military applications. Samsung highlighted in a press release, “With Samsung’s compact solution for the full stack of Private 5G that can run on a single server hardware, the Navy will benefit from quick deployments and less complex operations. Its private 5G radios will deliver improved uplink performance with optimized uplink features, designed to help government agencies upload vast amounts of data across numerous devices simultaneously.”
