The telecommunications landscape is set for an exciting shift as Swedish vendor Ericsson partners with Taiwanese operator Chunghwa Telecom to elevate Taiwan’s 5G network. This collaboration underscores the aim of modernizing telecommunications infrastructure while pushing towards sustainable solutions.

Chung Yung Chia, Vice President of Network Technology Group at Chunghwa Telecom, highlighted the alignment of Ericsson’s 5G solutions with the operator’s objectives for reduced carbon emissions and enhanced efficiency. “Ericsson’s advanced 5G solutions align perfectly with our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing network efficiency,” he stated. Such advancements align with Chunghwa Telecom’s 2045 Net Zero targets, placing sustainability at the forefront.

The contract comprehensively covers Ericsson’s 5G RAN portfolio, featuring energy-efficient ultralight remote radios like the dual-band Radio 4490HP. This technology promises a 54% reduction in embodied carbon footprint and over 40% lower energy consumption compared to its predecessors. Enhancements in multi-band capacity and uplink performance further solidify this portfolio as a step towards a future-ready network.

A significant advancement involves the use of Ericsson’s AI Intelligent RAN power-saving techniques. This innovation uses AI to monitor and optimize energy drawn from complex networks, maintaining performance while reducing energy use. Such automation can predict network load and optimize energy efficiency, offering operational sustainability without performance loss.

Additionally, Ericsson’s Site Digital Twin technology will revolutionize digital engineering and asset lifecycle management. This tool, based on open standards, represents a leap in efficient network management and modernization.

The modernization effort builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year, aiming to advance 5G-Advanced technology in Taiwan. Areas of focus include Extended Reality (XR), industrial automation, and AI-driven solutions, showcasing a strong commitment to advancing telecommunications.

Notably, Chunghwa Telecom has made strides in energy efficiency with Ericsson’s AI-powered smart energy solutions, cutting energy consumption by up to 34%.
