Google, in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm, has introduced Android XR. This new operating system blends XR, VR, and AR with a strong focus on AI interaction. At present, Android XR is in the developer preview phase. The initial compatible hardware, named Project Moohan, crafted by Samsung, will be available for consumers next year.

Google aims to replicate the successful Android ecosystem model by creating a vibrant developer and device-maker network for Android XR. The platform includes tools like ARCore, Android Studio, and Unity. This will enable developers to start building apps and games for the upcoming Android XR devices.

The announcement emphasizes support for Qualcomm partners like Lynx, Sony, and XREAL. This shows a collaborative pathway for developing an array of Android XR gadgets to satisfy diverse market needs. Though Project Moohan is a codename, its final product may differ. Featuring advanced displays and multi-modal input, the device prioritizes ergonomic comfort.

In terms of design and functionality, Samsung’s device shares similarities with Apple’s Vision Pro. However, it incorporates Gemini AI for conversational interaction. This allows a seamless switch between the real and virtual worlds using apps like Maps and YouTube more immersively. Other features include browsing with multiple virtual screens and quick information retrieval using gestures.

Google Play’s mobile and tablet applications will integrate smoothly, with more XR-specific content launching next year. Google states that Gemini will simplify tasks, which could be immensely practical or slightly intrusive in communal spaces.

Beyond headsets, Android XR is also slated to work with glasses designed for all-day use. Google desires a variety of glasses that seamlessly interact with Android devices for easy access to navigation, translations, and notifications without a phone.

Quote from Won-Joon Choi, EVP at Samsung: “XR has quickly shifted from a distant promise to a tangible reality. We believe it has the potential to unlock new and meaningful ways to interact with the world by truly resonating with your everyday lives, transcending physical boundaries.”

Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem, added: “We are at an inflection point for XR, where breakthroughs in multimodal AI enable natural and intuitive ways to use technology in your everyday life.”
