Nexfibre announced a significant milestone: its fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) network now covers 2 million premises. This rapid expansion, achieved in just two years, makes nexfibre the UK’s second largest alternative network. Some debate the validity of this claim due to CityFibre‘s larger footprint of over 4 million premises, but nexfibre’s growth remains noteworthy.
Nexfibre’s CEO, Rajiv Datta, highlighted this achievement, stating, “This is an outstanding achievement in just two years of operation—making nexfibre the UK’s second largest alternative network. However, our work is far from done. Our mission is to be part of a network platform that drives sustainable, nationwide competition, provides a genuine alternative to Openreach, and transforms access to broadband across the country.”
Founded in 2022 as a joint venture between Telefónica, Liberty Global, and InfraVia Capital Partners, nexfibre aimed to deploy FTTP to 7 million homes not yet served by Virgin Media’s network. The venture initially invested £4.5 billion. Reaching their first million premises in April 2024, they surpassed established operator construction rates, even challenging Openreach.
However, nexfibre has an ambitious target of reaching 5 million premises by 2026. Achieving this requires significant acceleration, aiming to cover an additional 3 million homes in the next year.
