Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of its new Asia Pacific (Thailand) Region. This development introduces three Availability Zones, signaling AWS’s inaugural infrastructure footprint in Thailand. At the same time, it becomes the fourteenth region in the broader Asia Pacific area. With Thailand’s expanding cloud computing landscape, largely driven by government initiatives like Thailand 4.0, the arrival of AWS is timely. These initiatives aim to boost innovation, productivity, and sustainable growth nationwide, providing a favorable environment for cloud adoption.

The new region is set to play a crucial role in assisting startups, corporations, government agencies, educational institutions, and non-profits. It will support them in running applications locally while ensuring data residency, aligning with Thailand’s digital transformation ambitions. Over the next 15 years, AWS projects an investment of $10 billion in the country, which could contribute significantly to its GDP and provide thousands of quality jobs annually.

In recent years, AWS has bolstered its presence in Thailand with strategic infrastructure deployments. In 2022, the company introduced AWS Local Zones in Bangkok, enhancing service proximity to large population centers. Furthermore, in 2023, a Direct Connect location was established in Bangkok. This enables secure, dedicated network connections that offer improved performance and reduced costs.

Globally, AWS operates across 111 Availability Zones in 35 regions. Looking ahead, new regions are planned for countries like Germany, Taiwan, and New Zealand, among others. The concept of Availability Zones is central to AWS’s strategy, offering geographically isolated zones that ensure service continuity with low latency across different locations.
