Samsung Electronics and KDDI Research have recently embarked on a collaborative venture to explore the integration of artificial intelligence in future 6G networks. With the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, these industry leaders aim to refine the application of AI to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies in next-generation mobile networks.

As 6G standardization progresses, so does the potential of AI to optimize network capabilities. MIMO technology, known for increasing transmission speeds and coverage using multiple antennas, offers significant improvements through the use of distributed MIMO (D-MIMO) systems. These systems enhance performance in boundary areas by deploying multiple cells within the network.

Through their joint research, Samsung and KDDI plan to develop AI-driven solutions to perfect the design and function of D-MIMO systems. This will lead to better transmission speeds for users and an overall increase in network capacity. Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun of Samsung highlighted the importance of this collaboration for advancing telecommunications through AI innovation. Hajime Nakamura, the CEO of KDDI Research, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the role AI and D-MIMO will play in creating high-quality, user-focused 6G networks.

Additionally, Samsung’s involvement with industry alliances like the AI-RAN Alliance and the Next G Alliance shows their commitment to forging the path for AI-integrated communication technologies. Samsung hosted the Silicon Valley Future Wireless Summit to bolster collaboration in the telecom sector last year.

Highlighting their forward-thinking approach, Samsung released a new white paper “AI-Native & Sustainable Communication.” It delves into developments in mobile communications and the expected advancements with the shift from 5G to 5G-Advanced. These advancements will incorporate AI to support new services and prepare the groundwork for 6G technology.

The white paper outlines emerging services such as Immersive Extended Reality, Digital Twin technologies, Massive Communication capabilities, and Ubiquitous Connectivity. Each aims to enrich various industries and improve real-world connectivity.
