Qualcomm recently expanded its technological realm by acquiring MovianAI, a generative AI research specialist. This move is part of an ongoing strategy to enhance Qualcomm’s Research & Development and integrate advanced AI technologies into various sectors such as smartphones, computers, and vehicles. This acquisition adds to their recent purchase of Edge Impulse, a company innovating miniaturized machine learning tools for IoT environments.

With this deal, Qualcomm secures the expertise of Dr. Hung Bui, the founder of MovianAI, along with his skilled team situated in Hanoi. Described as a powerhouse, the team is known for pushing AI boundaries, especially in the fields of machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. Qualcomm indicates this collaboration will significantly boost its AI innovation capabilities.

Dr. Bui stated, “We are ready to contribute to Qualcomm’s mission of making breakthroughs in fundamental AI research and scale them across industries.” He aligns with Qualcomm’s goals to emerge as a leader in cutting-edge AI solutions. This franchise already had a strong foundation within Vietnam’s technology ecosystem, further strengthened by years of collaboration, according to Qualcomm’s announcement.

The acquisition complements Qualcomm’s regrouping of its IoT strategy. By combining hardware, software, and services, the aim is to scale offerings across multiple sectors. This aligns with the recent introduction of the new Dragonwing brand, aimed at defining IoT solutions separate from its standard Snapdragon products.

Both acquisitions—Edge Impulse and MovianAI—each bring unique strengths to Qualcomm’s portfolio. While MovianAI focuses on large-scale AI models for expansive applications like smartphones and vehicles, Edge Impulse optimizes AI for smaller devices. Together, they help Qualcomm in mastering an end-to-end expertise across the AI value chain.

Jilei Hou, the senior vice president of engineering at Qualcomm, emphasized, “This acquisition underscores our commitment to dedicating the necessary resources to R&D that makes us the driving force behind the next wave of AI innovation.” The goal is to benefit a broad range of industries and consumers through these advanced AI capabilities.
