In a notable achievement, Nokia, Telia, and the Finnish Defense Forces recently showcased an innovative 5G network slicing capability. This demonstration marked the world’s first seamless 5G standalone slice handover across different countries using a live network. Conducted in Finland during a Nordic exercise in March, this trial is a significant step forward for advancing critical 5G application in defense and other essential sectors.

During the trial, a continuous and secure data connection was maintained over a 5G standalone slice as it moved across networks in three countries. Such robust capabilities are vital for modern military operations, where personnel often require consistent access to critical applications, even while operating internationally. Jarmo Vähätiitto, Major General of the Finnish Defense Command, stated, “This trial marks a significant milestone in showcasing the dual-use possibilities of 5G for defense while also enhancing communication capabilities within the NATO domain.”

The demonstration was made possible using Nokia’s advanced 5G Core Software as a Service (SaaS) and AirScale 5G base stations. These are powered by the innovative ReefShark System-on-Chip technology, integrated with Telia’s commercial network. Moreover, Nokia’s MantaRay Network Management system enhanced network oversight, ensuring seamless monitoring and management. This trial underscores the potential of commercial 5G networks for defense operations.

Highlighting the collaboration, Jari Collin, CTO at Telia Finland, expressed optimism about using commercial technology for critical defense communications. “5G and network slicing enable secure, mission-critical communications,” he said. This initiative satisfies Finnish Defense Forces’ needs and illustrates that commercial networks can support defense operations.

On a broader scale, this breakthrough has considerable implications for international defense cooperations, fostering secure and reliable communications across borders. Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, remarked on the significance, noting the trial as a commitment to delivering powerful 5G solutions for defense purposes, assisting them in meeting mission-critical goals.
