O2 Telefonica has initiated a groundbreaking expansion of 5G streetlights throughout Germany. Together with infrastructure partner 5G Synergiewerk, this innovative project aims to enhance 5G network coverage in bustling downtown areas and tourist hotspots across the nation.
The deployment kicks off in 2025 across Germany’s largest 25 cities, with plans for broader coverage in the future. These advanced 5G streetlights, equipped with small antennas, are replacing traditional lamp posts. This setup offers swift mobile connections and integrates seamlessly into urban landscapes, particularly where rooftop access is constrained and data demands are high.
As Matthias Sauder, director of networks at O2 Telefonica, stated, “We want to promote sustainable digital connectivity for consumers and businesses in cities.” These smart poles are designed for essential urban activities, from streaming to networking intelligent sensors, bringing advanced connectivity to citizens’ doorsteps.
The practical application of these streetlights was successfully demonstrated during the 2024 European Championship in Cologne. They facilitated uninterrupted connectivity for event-goers, prompting further installations at major events such as Oktoberfest in Munich and Rheinkirmes in Düsseldorf. By the end of 2025, 50 additional smart poles are anticipated.
Beyond events, the initiative targets popular tourist destinations on the North and Baltic Seas. Enhanced connectivity is crucial during peak holiday seasons, benefiting local enterprises.
This project underscores O2 Telefonica’s commitment to innovative solutions. In October 2023, the telco launched its 5G Standalone network under the 5G Plus brand, promising better voice quality with voice-over-new-radio (VoNR) technology. Using the 700 MHz, 1.8 GHz, and 3.6 GHz frequency bands, the 5G SA network aims for full coverage across Germany by the end of 2025, expanding opportunities for industries like healthcare and public sectors.
As the rollout progresses, these 5G-enabled streetlights offer multifaceted solutions for cities. They present energy-efficient LED lighting, robust mobile service, and connectivity enhancements, supporting the transformation of German cities into future-ready smart environments.
