In a significant move towards enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, Malaysia has joined forces with Nvidia and YTL Power International for a high-impact project. With a substantial investment of RM10 billion (around $2.36 billion), the initiative aims to establish Malaysia as a pivotal hub in AI innovation.

The core component of this collaboration involves developing Malaysia’s sovereign large language model (LLM). This development aspires to strengthen the nation’s AI proficiency while ensuring digital independence. The partnership will see the construction of AI data centers, utilizing Nvidia’s advanced GPUs and powered by sustainable energy sources. This commitment reflects a growing trend to integrate environmental considerations into technological advancements.

Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Malaysia’s Minister for Investment, Trade, and Industry, emphasizes the strategic neutrality of the region. Through such initiatives, he envisions ASEAN moving towards becoming a leader in the global semiconductor and AI sectors.

YTL Power acts as the driving force behind this AI ecosystem build-out. Collaborations with global tech entities and local contractors form an integral part of this project. Notably, YTL Communications has already taken significant steps to bolster Malaysia’s technological infrastructure. This includes partnerships to enhance AI applications and augment network robustness across the country.
