OpenAI is set to make a significant leap in AI infrastructure within Europe. The company has announced its pioneering project, Stargate Norway, which marks its first European AI data center under the OpenAI for Countries initiative. Strategically located in Narvik, Norway, this project harnesses the region’s abundant renewable hydropower and low energy costs, providing a sustainable solution for large-scale AI operations.
Upon completion, Stargate Norway will boast 230MW of compute capacity, with ambitious plans to expand up to 520MW. “This is one of the most ambitious AI infrastructure investments in Europe to date,” remarks OpenAI, highlighting the importance of this development. The data center will operate on renewable power exclusively, utilizing advanced cooling systems to maximize efficiency. The project will further enhance regional sustainability by distributing excess heat to low-carbon enterprises nearby.
The joint venture between infrastructure provider Nscale and industrial conglomerate Aker entails 50/50 ownership, with Nscale leading the development. Aiming to deploy 100,000 Nvidia GPUs by the end of 2026, the facility will ensure its operations are as eco-friendly as possible while providing valuable resources to the local tech ecosystem.
This initiative prioritizes local benefits. OpenAI aims to give Norwegian startups and researchers preferential access to the compute resources, fostering innovation within the country. The remaining capacity will be available to various governments and enterprises across the UK and Northern Europe, broadening the initiative’s impact.
Additionally, Stargate Norway forms a part of the broader Stargate initiative, a $500 billion long-term project aimed at establishing a network of AI data centers globally. The primary objective is to address growing demands for AI across sectors like research, healthcare, automation, defense, and finance.
