U Mobile has forged a significant path in the Malaysian telecommunications landscape by signing a three-year 5G wholesale agreement with Telekom Malaysia (TM). This partnership represents a strategic move to enhance Malaysia’s 5G infrastructure. By providing multi-operator core network (MOCN) services, U Mobile will assist TM with provisioning, system integration, and ongoing optimization, thereby enabling TM’s access to U Mobile’s already established 5G infrastructure.

This ambitious collaboration aligns with U Mobile’s goal to achieve 80% population coverage by the second half of 2026. The rollout has already surpassed initial expectations, paving the way for a heightened 5G presence nationwide. Wong Heang Tuck, U Mobile’s CEO, expressed gratitude to the Malaysian government for appointing U Mobile as a new player in the nation’s 5G market. He emphasized the company’s commitment to accelerating 5G adoption and creating value for Malaysia’s industry and its people.

Since its inception, U Mobile has actively contributed to the advancement of Malaysia’s 5G ecosystem. The carrier launched its 5G services in 2024, following authorization by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). This endorsement marks U Mobile as a critical player in the shift toward a dual 5G network structure, further supported by the state’s existing 5G network, Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), which reached 80% coverage in populated areas by late 2023.

DNB, a government initiative launched in 2021, serves as a pivotal component in developing the nation’s 5G network infrastructure. It has allowed private telecommunications firms, including U Mobile, to leverage their services to offer enhanced 5G connectivity to customers. DNB’s 5G network infrastructure was built with collaboration from Ericsson, highlighting the integration of global expertise in Malaysia’s telecommunications strategy.

U Mobile’s commitment extends beyond basic network services. The company aims to bolster Malaysia’s digital transformation through a collaborative enterprise innovation platform (EIP). This platform strives to unite enterprises and technology providers to explore and develop 5G-Advanced (5G-A) and AI-related applications.

As U Mobile and Telekom Malaysia set their sights on delivering comprehensive 5G coverage, this initiative reflects a broader vision for digital progress in Malaysia. The alignment with the country’s dual network model not only fosters competition but also ensures robust infrastructure development that can sustain future technological advancements. This partnership is a testament to U Mobile’s and TM’s dedication to driving forward the digital economy landscape of Malaysia.
