The logistical demands of managing a nationwide field workforce, coupled with environmental goals, create a significant challenge for telecom companies. Openreach’s reliance on advanced tools such as BigQuery and Vertex AI is central to this effort. These tools effectively manage their 24,000-vehicle fleet, regarded as one of the largest commercial fleets in the UK. James Tappenden, MD of Fibre First & Shared Services at Openreach, emphasized the importance of this partnership, highlighting the benefits that come from implementing Google Cloud’s technologies in real-world scenarios.
Openreach’s vans annually cover around 200 million miles to aid broadband network expansion. By utilizing the cloud for telematics data, the company employs geoanalytics to cut down on idle engines and unnecessary travel, resulting in considerable financial savings. Such innovation supports Openreach in accelerating the shift from diesel to electric vehicles. This transition is instrumental in reducing annual road emissions by approximately 10,000 tonnes of CO2e.
Moreover, predictive analysis of vehicle health data provides critical insights for identifying faults, allowing efficient fleet management. This minimizes the downtime of vehicles and enhances the overall sustainability of operations. Integrating physical road maps into virtual planning platforms opens opportunities for strategic advantages in undertaking national rollouts.
One of the standout innovations is the creation of a “digital twin” of the UK’s transport networks through Vertex AI. This digital model comprehensively includes broadband infrastructures, waterways, railways, and roads, which covers a vast landscape of 35 million businesses and homes. By visualizing this dataset, planners are empowered with the ability to quickly and intelligently pinpoint potential locations for extending full-fibre connections.
Openreach is also leveraging Gemini Enterprise to tackle legacy system upgrades, a common hindrance to innovation. This tool facilitates the automated conversion of outdated queries into robust BigQuery code, significantly speeding up time-to-insight and freeing engineers from routine maintenance tasks.
