Deutsche Telekom in Germany has taken a significant stride in business broadband by leveraging Satellite Internet Access (SIA) through a collaboration with Starlink. This advancement will support enterprises and public sector organizations, particularly in areas where fiber or mobile networks are either not yet available or require added redundancy.
Telekom Deutschland, DT’s German brand, offers a unique satellite-based broadband service. This fully managed service handles installation, network integration, and prioritizes business capacities to ensure stable and reliable performance. This innovation addresses the need for continuity in critical operations, whether in remote areas, construction sites, or crisis situations. Customers have the flexibility to access support from system specialists who can be available on-site as needed.
Klaus Werner, Managing Director, Business Customers at Telekom Deutschland, highlights the solution’s promise of reliability, emphasizing that the sky becomes a backup line through Starlink. This service ensures crucial connectivity in areas lacking terrestrial networks, providing download speeds up to 400 Mbps and upload speeds up to 40 Mbps. It supports demanding applications, including VPN connections and full site networking, and has been available for business customers since spring 2026.
The service is set alongside Direct-to-Device (D2D) offerings planned for 2028. While SIA caters to stationary broadband needs, D2D aims to extend mobile coverage in areas without network availability, connecting smartphones directly to satellites without extra hardware. This integration supports voice, SMS, and data services, enhancing personal connectivity.
In March, DT announced expanding its network coverage through D2D in partnership with Starlink across ten European countries by 2028. Abdu Mudesir, Board Member for Product and Technology at Deutsche Telekom, expressed the strategic complement of network expansion with satellite-to-mobile connectivity, stating, “Connectivity creates security and trust. And we deliver. Everywhere.”
Starlink’s VP of Sales, Stephanie Bednarek, also remarked on the significance of this agreement, promising Europe’s first launch of Starlink’s V2 technology. This advancement is set to enhance data, voice, and messaging capabilities, providing broadband directly to mobile phones.
