In a bold move toward corporate sustainability, the Cornwall-based fibre network builder, Wildanet, has proudly become a certified B-Corp, making it the first UK altnet to earn this distinction. This not only aligns with the growing global push for responsible business practices but also brings added responsibility to telecommunications industry.
For those who are not familiar, B Corp Certification is an esteemed recognition affirming that a company meets strict standards in performance, transparency and accountability. The criteria stretch beyond conventional perception as they encompass various factors ranging from employee benefits and supply chain practices to input materials and philanthropic activities.
At its core, this certification follows a comprehensive evaluation process, based on the B Impact Assessment by B-Lab. This necessitates companies to score above 80, demonstrating their commitment to environmental and social performance. The process also requires an alteration in the company’s governance to ensure accountability to all stakeholders, not just shareholders.
The journey to becoming a certified B Corp corresponds to the company’s size, mandating larger firms to shoulder bigger commitments. For Wildanet, achieving this milestone was a year-long vigorous pursuit, executed in collaboration with local Cornish businesses. Under its B23 initiative, the company has committed to supporting these businesses achieving B Corp Certification, exemplifying its dedication to community development and sustainability.
Helen Wylde-Archibald, CEO of Wildanet, expressed the company’s enthusiasm upon this achievement, stating, “We are delighted and very proud to be recognised as a Certified B Corp and to be leading the way for UK AltNets. Our founding mission, ethos and operation is rooted in responsibility and sustainability. This mandate reflects the entire Wildanet team’s hard work and dedication, underlining our commitment to providing transformational broadband services while ensuring we act as a sustainability-focussed business benefiting society and the environment.”
Indeed, this certification is likely to drive further conversations within the industry. With the mounting demand for building a sustainable and equitable world, it poses a crucial question – is the UK telecom sector doing enough? This question and more will be addressed at this year’s Connected Britain and Connected North conferences.
