Samsung Acquires Oxford Semantic to Elevate AI Personalization

Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics has inked a deal to acquire Oxford Semantic Technologies, a UK-based startup known for its highly specialized knowledge graph technology. This acquisition underscores Samsung’s ambitions to harness sophisticated AI solutions to enhance user experiences across its product ecosystem.

Knowledge graph technology functions by storing data as a network of interlinked concepts, akin to human cognition. This enables the technology to connect and integrate data, thereby facilitating rapid information retrieval and personalized recommendations. Notably, Samsung views this as a cornerstone for crafting more refined and individualized AI solutions in the future.

Yet, deploying this technology comes with challenges. The complex computational processes involved in transforming extensive real-world data into actionable knowledge graphs are significant. Oxford Semantic Technologies has managed to overcome these hurdles, developing a technology that optimizes data processing for advanced reasoning in both cloud and on-device contexts.

Founded in 2017 by three Oxford University professors, the startup has specialized in knowledge representation and semantic reasoning. Its AI engine, RDFox, is already being used by diverse sectors like finance, manufacturing, and e-commerce across Europe and North America.

Samsung Electronics has maintained a collaborative relationship with Oxford Semantic Technologies since 2018, supported by investment from Samsung Ventures. With this acquisition, Samsung aims to secure critical engines for personal knowledge graphs. These graphs will bridge information across various services and apps, resulting in hyper-personalized user experiences.

Additionally, integrating knowledge graph technology with on-device AI, notably in Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series, promises unique, tailored user interactions while keeping personal data secure. This technology is poised to influence all Samsung products, from mobile devices to televisions and home appliances.

Peter Crocker, CEO of Oxford Semantic Technologies, expressed enthusiasm about the synergy: “By integrating Samsung’s expertise in user experience and data with our advanced knowledge graph and reasoning technology, we will provide Samsung’s customers with even more sophisticated personalization. Developing RDFox with Samsung and being part of a larger group will benefit all our clients.”

Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, Head of Samsung Research and CTO of Samsung Electronics, emphasized the strategic importance of the acquisition: “As global consumers realize their growing need for more personalized AI experiences, the acquisition of Oxford Semantic Technologies will further boost Samsung’s strong capabilities in knowledge engineering.”
