Softbank and Intelsat have launched a groundbreaking initiative to ensure seamless 5G connectivity using a hybrid network combining mobile and satellite technologies. This collaboration aims to foster uninterrupted global connectivity, positioning itself as a pioneering effort in the telecommunications landscape.
The two companies are developing a universal device capable of maintaining network connectivity no matter its location. This device will enable applications like connected vehicles to seamlessly switch to satellite communication when out of mobile network coverage. The broad applicability includes use cases in land mobile, maritime, and disaster response sectors.
The hybrid network products from this partnership will follow new 3GPP 5G non-terrestrial network standards and will progress through various development phases. Intelsat’s CTO, Bruno Fromont, commented on the collaboration, highlighting a “pioneering vision of Ubiquitous Networking and seamless interoperability between satellite and terrestrial networks.” He emphasized the strategic collaboration with SoftBank and the advances in 5G-based standardizations, enabling devices to roam freely between networks.
This development comes as Softbank increases its focus on satellite communication. Recently, the telecom operator partnered with Eutelsat Group to offer satellite connectivity services through Eutelsat OneWeb’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network, set to launch services this December. SoftBank has also obtained a blanket license for infrastructure operations including Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) earth stations and mobile earth stations, marking a first for a Japan-based telecom operator.
