Korean tech giants, SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics, have teamed up to boost 5G connectivity through AI-fueled enhancements. As part of the collaboration, SK Telecom will deploy Samsung’s innovative AI-RAN Parameter Recommender, which optimizes base station settings using historical mobile network data.

Initial tests reveal that the new tool improves 5G base station performance, enhancing network quality for users. This is achieved through SK Telecom’s deep learning approach, which utilizes data from its own networks to better adapt the AI solution to unique radio environments, although similar equipment can function variably across different locations.

The partnership’s vision extends beyond immediate gains. The firms plan to apply the AI technology in high-traffic zones like subway systems, with the goal of extensively testing and refining its effectiveness.

Moreover, SK Telecom aims to evolve the AI solution further. They are working on enhancing its ability to autonomously adjust base station signals and recalibrate transmission ranges when encountering signal weaknesses or data transmission issues. The integration of beamforming capabilities is also underway, aiming to fine-tune signal directionality and device communication in real time.

Ryu Tak-ki, head of infrastructure technology at SK Telecom, noted, “This achievement is significant as it confirms that we can maximize the potential performance of individual base stations by integrating AI. We will accelerate the evolution toward an AI-Native Network, which merges telecommunications and AI technology to provide a differentiated customer experience.”

In addition to these network optimizations, SK Telecom has also overhauled their AI personal assistant service. Recently, they introduced an upgraded version named “A.” or “A-DoT,” which focuses on improving daily life conveniences. This revamped app emphasizes natural conversation and daily management, supported by a robust language model.

Through “A.” users can manage appointments using voice commands, streamlining typical administrative tasks. The upgraded app also includes multiple conversational agents, each equipped with distinct AI functionalities. This feature allows users to compare different responses from diverse models, tailoring their AI interactions to specific needs.
