Nokia has launched a revolutionary 5G-enabled 360-degree camera, dubbed the Nokia 360 Camera, targeting Industry 4.0 applications. This device supports immersive 8K streaming, offering connectivity through 5G, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet. Additionally, it features spatial audio streaming, commonly known as 3D OZO. Alongside its RXRM software offering augmented and virtual reality capabilities, this camera is being positioned as an end-to-end solution for various industries.
This state-of-the-art camera boasts rugged characteristics, as evidenced by its IP67 waterproof and shock-resistant rating. It aims to revolutionize industrial sectors such as manufacturing, mining, oil, and gas. Public safety, entertainment, and smart-city applications are also anticipated beneficiaries. Notably, Nokia also provides a more affordable Wi-Fi-only version.
The device is designed to reduce the necessity for multiple traditional cameras across industrial sites. Its ability to operate in extreme temperatures further attests to its robustness. As the latest in a series of industrial 4G and 5G devices, it continues Nokia’s strategy to enhance private network ecosystems and seek new revenue streams.
One of its primary applications includes enhancing situational awareness and improving remote monitoring and inspection capabilities. This camera could potentially transform how industries oversee operations, providing teleoperation support in demanding environments such as sports stadiums and entertainment arenas.
Nokia emphasizes that the camera’s design considers harsh industrial conditions while maintaining cybersecurity standards. The RXRM platform offers APIs that enable AI adaptation for real-time analytics and augmented/virtual reality overlays. By delivering ultra-HD streaming with high precision, it offers a more immersive experience compared to traditional methods.
Finnish mining company Callio Pyhäjärvi has already adopted this RXRM and camera system, using it at the Pyhäsalmi mine, the deepest base metal mine in Europe. As repurposed by Callio Pyhäjärvi, the mine now functions as a hub for research, development, remote operations, and training, spearheading cutting-edge technologies.
