Nokia has partnered with Openreach to deploy its ONE Network platform, aimed at enhancing fibre network automation across the UK. This open-access fibre network will connect millions of homes and businesses. By integrating Nokia’s Altiplano and NSP controllers, Openreach can automate its fibre services, significantly reducing network complexity and streamlining operations by up to 85%.

Real-time monitoring tools will provide Openreach valuable insights into network performance. Currently offering wholesale broadband through around 300 service providers, their network covers urban and rural areas. This initiative makes the new platform flexible and scalable, meeting evolving customer demands while simplifying infrastructure.

Moreover, the modular design of the system promises to reduce both power consumption and space requirements at Ethernet exchange sites by over 50%. “This is the next step in our plans to build a future-proof, multi-service, one network platform,” stated Trevor Linney, Director of Network Technology at Openreach. The integration improves network management and operational efficiency, allowing for quicker fault identification and reduced costs.

Scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, the full fibre network aims to extend its reach from 17 million properties to 25 million, aligning with increasing broadband demands.
