EchoStar has announced a strategic partnership with MDA Space to advance its plans for launching a constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. This initiative aims to launch a new LEO satellite network by 2029. As the prime contractor, MDA Space will manage the design, manufacturing, and testing of the first batch of over 100 direct-to-device satellites. This contract holds an estimated value of $1.3 billion and is part of an ambitious $5 billion project.

The initial deployment will feature 200 satellites, with potential expansion to meet increased demand over time. Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space, emphasizes the company’s growing influence in the satellite market as they aim to become a leading contractor for satellite operators.

EchoStar’s history of significant investment in non-terrestrial network satellite connectivity positions the company to successfully execute this LEO constellation plan. President and CEO, Hamid Akhavan, highlights the project’s potential to bolster U.S. leadership in the space economy. The constellation will leverage 25×20 MHz of AWS-4/S-band 2GHz frequencies. Beyond basic communication services, it will connect to various sensors and mobile vehicles.

Satellite deliveries are slated for 2028, with commercial services expected to launch in 2029. While the project promises significant technological advancements and enhanced global connectivity, it involves substantial financial risks. Early investors and stakeholders will closely monitor the project’s progress and market demand.
