Orange has expanded its integration of Eutelsat‘s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology to enhance its emergency communications solutions. This step follows a previously announced collaboration aimed at using satellite technology to improve connectivity services. Recently, Orange Business revealed that the company has incorporated Eutelsat’s OneWeb LEO connectivity into its SafetyCase product. This innovation provides rugged, battery-powered network-in-a-box capability that establishes secure WiFi within 30 minutes, catering to enterprises, public entities, and emergency responders.
SafetyCase stands out due to its adaptability, using intelligent hybridization to transfer data over any available wide area network, coupled with a multi-SIM router and satellite antenna. Its capabilities were validated following Cyclone Chido when LEO satellite connections proved vital for continuing services in Mayotte.
In a strategic move, the inclusion of OneWeb LEO connectivity broadens SafetyCase’s options, alongside existing Starlink connections. Nassima Auvray, director of defense and security at Orange Business, emphasized that this integration rejuvenates their capability to “restore communications when everything stops.” This is crucial for national resilience and underlines Orange’s commitment to safety and emergency professionals, supported by their new Defence and Security division.
On the other hand, this development serves as a critical financial opportunity for Eutelsat, which has faced financial challenges, requiring substantial investments to sustain operations. Recent deals with the French government and military highlight Eutelsat’s vital role in providing a sovereign European satellite network, contrasting with the likes of Elon Musk’s Starlink.
Thus, Orange’s expansion of Eutelsat’s technology offers a dual benefit: it enhances Orange’s emergency service capabilities while providing Eutelsat with a critical avenue for financial and operational stability. This strategic alignment reflects the increasing importance of sovereign technological infrastructures amidst evolving global dynamics.
