In a significant step toward network innovation, Spanish operator MasOrange has partnered with the Swedish telecom giant Ericsson to expand its automation capabilities within the Radio Access Network (RAN). At the core of this initiative is the integration of Ericsson’s Intelligent Automation Platform, paired with specific rApps, which are RAN automation applications.

Through this collaboration, MasOrange aspires to enhance network optimization and efficiency. With the platform currently in a trial phase, Ericsson aims to seamlessly integrate it into existing commercial networks. Notable rApps being deployed include the Ericsson Cell Anomaly Detector, which proactively forecasts and addresses performance issues, thus minimizing network management complexities.

Moreover, the Future Connections Nix RAN Energy Saver takes sustainability in RAN energy management a notch higher by dynamically optimizing energy-saving functions without compromising consumer experience. This strategic maneuver aligns with the overarching industry trend towards smarter, sustainable networks.

Jean-Christophe Laneri, Head of Cognitive Network Solutions at Ericsson, noted, “rApps are the future of network management, with intelligent automation empowering service providers to deliver superior service quality with greater speed and precision.” This sentiment underscores Ericsson’s commitment to facilitating tailored solutions through close collaborations with operators like MasOrange, thereby driving the adoption of autonomous networks industry-wide.

While single-vendor Open RAN solutions might raise eyebrows concerning openness, Ericsson is making a deliberate effort to demonstrate compatibility with third-party rApps. This acknowledges the industry’s long-term goal of fostering multi-vendor cooperation within Open RAN environments, giving operators the flexibility to choose from a broader range of vendors.

Looking ahead, the partnership holds the promise of enriching MasOrange’s service offerings by leveraging advanced automation technologies. This step not only reinforces the operator’s technological edge but also sets a precedent for the future of network management, signifying a stride towards smarter, more adaptable network ecosystems.
