In an ambitious move to usher in the 6G era, Qualcomm has announced significant progress towards the commercialization of this next-generation technology. Speaking at the Mobile World Congress, the company unveiled an industry coalition with a roadmap aiming for initial 6G rollouts as early as 2029. Through ecosystem alignment, system validation, and an AI-native approach, Qualcomm is setting the pace for this transformative technology.
A central element of Qualcomm’s strategy involves collaboration with key partners. Qualcomm’s Senior Director of Technology, Ozge Koymen, described this year as a pivotal moment. According to Koymen, Qualcomm is actively developing both 6G gNodeB and User Equipment (UE) while partnering with industry leaders like Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung. “This is the world’s first 6G RF alignment with all the partners,” Koymen highlighted, pointing to the global scale of collaboration.
The approach is comprehensive, starting from a foundational level with focus areas such as spectrum, numerology, and channel bandwidths. Qualcomm and its collaborators are reviewing frequencies ranging “from upper 6 GHz all the way to 8.4 GHz,” ensuring alignment with 3GPP priorities. This strategy aims for seamless progression toward full over-the-air system validation.
To build robust infrastructure, Qualcomm envisions 6G systems that are power-efficient and fit for deploying distributed AI workloads in existing operational environments. This entails deploying advanced telco servers and radio equipment designed for brownfield sites with existing constraints. Giga-MIMO for emerging spectrum bands and heterogeneous computing setups are integral parts of this plan, further signaling the balanced focus on connectivity and efficiency.
Furthermore, Qualcomm’s internal prototypes have begun validating cutting-edge features, supporting a substantial 400 megahertz channel bandwidth, among other technological innovations. This experimentation is not isolated. Qualcomm is actively engaging with 3GPP and partner entities to integrate ongoing research and development into potential future products.
Qualcomm’s ultimate objective is to deliver 6G systems that enhance user experiences with superior capacity, coverage, and efficiency. By 2029, the company envisions these enhancements will translate into a scalable, efficient platform that offers superior user experiences globally: “We’ll see how those two can support each other — how those user experiences can now be enjoyed by everyone, deployed in the system efficiently and at scale,” Koymen stated.
