Omantel Boosts Port of Salalah with Private 5G Network

Omantel is making strides with a new project to enhance the Port of Salalah’s automation efforts through a managed private 5G network. The initiative promises almost 100% network availability, aiming to bolster the port’s push for increased automation.

An integral part of this development involves a dedicated 5G Standalone private core, alongside enhanced mobile sites. These additions are set to provide robust coverage for the port. Utilizing rugged devices, designed to endure harsh industrial environments, the project will deploy 600 SIMs, each equipped with a monthly data allocation.

To ensure seamless operations, the network will be overseen by Omantel’s network operations center and a dedicated business call center. Integration with the port’s current operational systems further enhances the network’s functionality. This lays a foundation for improved digitalization, driving productivity and maintaining essential connectivity for critical operations like real-time data exchange across various applications and equipment.

Port of Salalah CEO, Steven Yoogalingam, emphasized the importance of this move. “As we continue to modernize our operations and embrace automation, reliable and high‑performance connectivity becomes essential to our success,” he said. The deployment of the 5G private network is expected to validate new capabilities, enhance real-time decision-making, and boost operational resilience.

Aladdin bin Abdullah Bait Fadhil, CEO of Omantel, highlighted the broader implications of the project. Success here could set the stage for similar 5G network rollouts across Oman’s logistics and industrial sectors. “Through the deployment of advanced private 5G infrastructure, we are enabling smarter operations, greater efficiency, and sustainable growth while empowering people with the technologies and capabilities needed to thrive in a digital economy,” he noted.

While the deployment of 5G networks such as this offers numerous advantages like improved operational efficiency and enhanced data handling, there are also challenges to consider. One significant hurdle is ensuring the infrastructure’s capability to handle increased data loads without compromising security. Moreover, investment costs and maintaining consistent network availability in varying industrial environments remain critical considerations.

This initiative by Omantel is a significant step. It not only advances industrial automation at the Port of Salalah but also potentially sets a precedent for future technological integrations across Oman. As digital economies continue to evolve, projects like this highlight the essential role of advanced connectivity solutions in modernizing and optimizing industrial operations.
