However, the same tools now support a darker trend. Fraudulent applicants use synthetic identities, fake resumes, and deepfake video interviews. For telecom, cloud, and VoIP companies, the risk is serious.
The issue surfaced in a recent discussion with Magen Gicinto, Chief People Officer at Nisos. She described an alarming hiring experience involving a suspected North Korean operative.
Nisos had opened a role for an AI architect engineer. The applicant followed the usual process. Yet after the first interview, the team noticed unusual signals.
“It starts with just education,” Gicinto says.
That message matters for every digital business. Hiring teams now sit on the front line of cybersecurity. A bad hire can create risks before IT detects any threat.
In remote interviews, attackers can hide behind convincing digital profiles. They may use altered images, scripted answers, or AI-generated video. Some profiles show impressive histories, but little real evidence supports them.
For telecom providers, the stakes reach beyond payroll fraud. A fraudulent worker could access source code, customer records, routing data, or internal systems. In unified communications environments, that access can expose sensitive business conversations.
At the same time, companies cannot abandon remote hiring. Global talent remains essential for software, security, and network engineering teams. Remote work also helps firms scale quickly in competitive markets.
Therefore, businesses need a stronger hiring model. They should verify identity before issuing equipment or system access. They should also compare resumes, social profiles, interview behavior, and work samples.
Recruiters should watch for patterns, not single mistakes. A newly created profile claiming years of experience deserves review. So does a resume that mirrors the job description too closely.
Further warning signs include shifting addresses or banking details. Candidates relying on off-screen prompts may also need extra checks. Technical tests should confirm the skills listed on the application.

Importantly, companies should avoid creating a hostile candidate experience. Strong checks can still feel professional and respectful. Clear communication helps genuine applicants understand the process.
