FiberCop Plans 100 Edge Hubs Across Italy

FiberCop plans to build more than 100 edge data centres across Italy. The move aims to bring computing power closer to users, businesses, and public services.

The company has already launched its first site in Rome. It sits inside an existing FiberCop exchange. Further deployments will follow in Turin, Genoa, Bologna, Naples, and Palermo.

This rollout marks a shift in telecom infrastructure strategy. Traditional exchanges mainly handled network access. FiberCop now wants them to become local digital service hubs.

Massimo Sarmi, chairman and CEO of FiberCop, said: “Our exchanges are moving from network access points to become true innovation hubs, in which connectivity, computing power and storage capacity are integrated to support the country’s digital development.

“With this plan, FiberCop takes a further step forward in transforming its network infrastructure into an enabling technology platform, capable of supporting the growth of the edge cloud, artificial intelligence and new digital services.”

The plan could bring clear advantages for operators and enterprises. Local data processing can reduce delays across digital services. This matters for real-time applications, connected industry, smart cities, and healthcare systems.

In simple terms, edge data centres move workloads nearer to the data source. This avoids sending every request to a distant cloud facility. As a result, services can respond faster and use networks more efficiently.

FiberCop also expects better network management from the new platform. Operators could place applications closer to customers. Public bodies could host sensitive services inside national infrastructure.

However, the project also brings execution pressure. Building 100 sites requires strong planning, power capacity, and operational discipline. Edge facilities need reliable cooling, security, monitoring, and skilled support teams.

The business case will also need proof. Telecom operators have discussed edge computing for years. Yet many deployments still wait for strong demand and clear revenue models.

Even so, demand may rise as AI adoption expands. Many AI tools need fast access to local data. Processing information near the source can improve privacy and reduce transport costs.

FiberCop says its national network gives it a strong starting position. Using existing exchanges may reduce deployment complexity. It can also shorten the path between fibre access and computing resources.

Alongside the rollout, the company will invest in research and development. Its Innovation Hub will support work with universities, research centres, and industry partners.

For Italy’s digital market, the programme could create an important platform. If demand grows, FiberCop may help operators launch faster local services. The next test will be turning infrastructure into sustainable customer value.
