Ericsson has secured a strategic role in South Korea’s next network experiment. The vendor will serve as the only global technology partner in an SK Telecom-led consortium. The project supports South Korea’s government-backed Hyper-AI Network Infrastructure Demonstration Project.
The initiative forms part of the country’s wider AI Highway plan. South Korea wants nationwide AI infrastructure in place by 2030. It also wants stronger leadership in 6G and AI-native networks.
For Ericsson, the role offers rare access to a demanding market. South Korea often favors strong domestic technology suppliers. So, this partnership gives Ericsson a valuable proving ground.
However, SK Telecom will not work alone across the national program. KT will lead a separate AI-RAN pilot under the same framework. This structure keeps competition alive between major Korean operators.
Ericsson’s main contribution centers on its Intelligent Automation Platform. The vendor will also bring AI-powered rApps and open management tools. These tools help networks adjust performance without constant human action.
In simple terms, the network learns how to manage itself. It can shift resources when traffic or conditions change. That capability matters for factories, logistics sites, and safety systems.
The pilot combines 5G Standalone with AI-driven automation and distributed AI computing. These systems will support so-called physical AI use cases. Examples include patrol robots, self-driving logistics vehicles, and industrial safety monitoring.
Such applications demand more than normal mobile broadband performance. A video stream can survive a brief delay. A refinery robot or autonomous vehicle cannot accept the same risk.
This places heavy pressure on the automation layer. It must detect problems quickly and respond in real time. The pilot will test whether that promise works outside the lab.
The program also extends an earlier agreement between the two companies. Ericsson and SK Telecom signed an MoU in March 2026. That agreement covers AI-RAN and future 6G research through 2031.
The project will run in two main phases. Phase one begins in 2026 and continues into 2027. It will test patrol robots in Incheon and Pangyo.
Interestingly, Samsung equipment will support the first phase. That shows domestic suppliers remain central to the plan. Ericsson’s larger role starts during the second phase.
In phase two, Ericsson will deploy AI-RAN at KG Mobility’s Pyeongtaek plant. The site will test autonomous vehicles in logistics operations. This use case should strongly challenge Ericsson’s automation stack.
Meanwhile, SK Telecom will also evaluate Samsung, Nokia, and HFR equipment. That approach gives the operator flexibility before future procurement decisions. It also limits any single vendor’s control.
Still, Ericsson now holds a highly visible position. If the trial succeeds, it could influence commercial AI-RAN deployments. It may also shape how operators connect AI, automation, and future radio networks.
