Openreach is preparing a major speed lift for its fibre broadband network. The UK network provider will expand the use of XGS-PON technology across more locations.
The move aims to bring greater capacity to homes and businesses. It also pushes Full Fibre beyond today’s 1.8Gbps top download speed. Openreach says the upgraded platform could support speeds up to 8.5Gbps.
XGS-PON is a fibre access technology. In simple terms, it lets operators move more data over existing fibre. It can support broadband services of up to 10Gbps. That gives providers more headroom as usage keeps rising.
The first wave will reach more than one million premises over 12 months. This follows a pilot launched in March. That trial covered 40,000 homes and businesses in Guildford and nearby areas.
Openreach also has a wider ambition. It wants to extend the technology across about one third of its Full Fibre network. The company expects this work to take place over five years.
However, the upgrade will not arrive everywhere at once. Openreach will use a mix of new builds and infrastructure upgrades. It will also modernise network equipment where needed. Demand and customer feedback will shape the schedule.
For telecoms users, the extra speed opens useful possibilities. Larger households can run more high-bandwidth services at the same time. Businesses can move large files faster. Cloud services can also perform more smoothly.
For communications engineers, the capacity story may matter even more. Fibre networks increasingly support video meetings, cloud voice, remote work, and connected devices. Stronger access networks reduce bottlenecks at the edge of service delivery.
Still, customers may need compatible service plans and equipment. Retail providers must also decide how to package faster tiers. Pricing could influence how quickly users adopt the new speeds.
Openreach Director of Network Technology, Trevor Linney, said: “Our Full Fibre network already offers Gigabit-capable broadband to more than 23.4 million premises, and more than 9.4 million customers have upgraded so far.
“As demand for data continues to grow, our investment in XGS-PON technology will enable us to offer even higher speeds over the same network, and the additional capacity needed to support the UK’s digital future.
“By continuing to invest in upgrades, we’re delivering a platform that will power the next generation of technology, from AI-enabled services, smart homes and future mobile networks, to cloud-based business and public services.”
The announcement underlines a broader industry shift. Fibre networks now serve as strategic platforms, not just broadband pipes. As data demand grows, operators need upgrades that preserve existing assets while expanding capacity. Openreach believes XGS-PON offers that path for the UK market.
