Nokia Expands Live Testing for 5G Core Innovation

Nokia is widening access to its Mobile Core Early Access programme. The move gives operators and enterprises a live testing route. They can explore new mobile core functions before major buying decisions.

The programme first launched in June with 30 participating companies. Registration has now opened to the wider telecoms industry. This expands its reach beyond selected early participants.

At its core, the initiative offers a practical test environment. Companies can see how new network functions behave under real conditions. This matters as networks become more software-driven and automated.

Mobile core systems sit at the centre of modern networks. They manage user sessions, mobility, security, and service delivery. In simple terms, they help networks connect people and applications reliably.

The timing is important for operators planning 5G core upgrades. Many want stronger automation, improved analytics, and better network exposure. Network exposure means sharing selected network capabilities through controlled digital interfaces.

Nokia said the programme helps customers move beyond slides and lab demonstrations. It gives technologists a clearer view of deployment value. It also reduces uncertainty before wider rollouts.

Kal De, Senior Vice President of Core Networks at Nokia, said: “Mobile innovation cycles continue to accelerate, and operators need more than presentations and demonstrations to make confident technology choices.

“Mobile Core Early Access provides a practical way to experience the latest mobile core innovations in a live environment. By bringing capabilities closer to customers earlier, we help them reduce uncertainty and move more quickly from exploration to deployment.”

For operators, this approach can shorten evaluation time. It may also help teams compare new features faster. Engineers can test use cases without committing to full deployment.

However, early access programmes still require careful planning. A live environment can show promise, but production networks bring extra pressure. Operators must still validate security, resilience, support models, and integration needs.

There is also the question of internal readiness. New mobile core capabilities demand trained teams and clear business goals. Without those, trials may produce limited commercial impact.

Even so, the programme reflects a wider industry shift. Telecoms suppliers now want customers involved earlier in development. This can improve product fit and accelerate adoption.

Omdia Principal Analyst of Mobile Infrastructure Roberto Kompany said: “Nokia’s Mobile Core Early Access program addresses a longstanding challenge for operators and enterprises: gaining practical exposure to emerging core network capabilities before making deployment decisions.

“By providing access to a live, regularly updated environment that showcases real-world 5G Core, automation, analytics and network exposure use cases, Nokia is reducing evaluation friction and helping customers shorten innovation cycles.

“As the industry moves toward AI-native core networks, initiatives such as Nokia’s Mobile Core Early Access can play an important role in accelerating technology adoption and improving customer confidence in future network investments.”

The reference to AI-native cores points to the next network phase. Operators increasingly want systems that predict issues and adjust automatically. That could improve service quality and reduce manual work.

For the wider telecoms market, Nokia’s programme signals growing urgency. Vendors must prove value earlier. Operators must innovate faster, while protecting reliability and investment discipline.
