Huawei Watch D3 Drives Connected Health Research in Europe

Huawei is moving its wearable strategy beyond consumer gadgets and fitness tracking. The company now wants its watches to support health monitoring, medical research, and data-led prevention.

At an event in Munich, Huawei presented the Watch D3 and its European Terve Research platform. The launch showed how smartwatches are becoming health tools, not just lifestyle accessories.

The Watch D3 combines blood pressure monitoring with continuous trend tracking. It uses a small pump and airbag for traditional measurements. It also uses PPG sensors to follow changes between readings.

This matters because blood pressure tracking still faces trust challenges. Wearable makers must prove accuracy, calibration, and real-world reliability. Huawei’s mixed method aims to reduce those concerns.

The device has received CE Medical Device certification for several measurement modes. These include resting blood pressure and 24-hour monitoring. It also covers readings before and after exercise.

Huawei says the device passed ISO standards for activity-related blood pressure accuracy. The company also reduced the size of the watch. It is 17.7% thinner and 9% lighter than its predecessor.

For users, this could make long-term monitoring easier. Traditional ambulatory monitoring often disrupts sleep and daily life. Watch D3 reduces repeated inflations by using fewer pump-based measurements.

However, health wearables must handle sensitive data with great care. Users and institutions will expect strong privacy controls. They will also demand clear consent and transparent data use.

This is where Terve Research becomes important. The platform connects wearable data with European medical and academic studies. It allows closed research groups and open opt-in programs.

Thryve manages and operates the platform independently. Huawei funds the project, but researchers lead the studies. Initial work will examine social jetlag and cardiovascular risk.

For telecom and digital infrastructure professionals, this trend carries wider meaning. Health wearables depend on secure connectivity, cloud systems, and trusted data flows. They also need interoperability across devices, apps, and medical platforms.

“From metabolic monitoring and active health management to brain activity sensing, wearables are no longer just about your wrist. We are moving toward a complete picture of your health, a full-body system that monitors, understands, and responds,” said Rico Zhang, President of Huawei’s Smart Wearable and Health Product Line.

Huawei is also expanding its smartwatch lineup in Europe. The HUAWEI WATCH GT 7 series adds stronger sports tracking and health features. The Watch 6 series returns with calling, navigation, payments, and AI-driven workout analysis.

Zhou Hong, President of Huawei Research Institute, Europe, highlighted the wider opportunity. “Wearable devices enable fast, convenient and reliable multimodal measurements anytime and anywhere, providing actionable insights to personalize interventions and support more effective behaviour management. That is why the health sector is so promising: the potential for discovery is enormous, and the need has never been greater.”

The wearable market is shifting from step counts to preventive health insights. Huawei wants to lead that shift with devices, software, and research partnerships. Success will depend on trust, accuracy, and responsible data handling.
