Ericsson has signed a four-year agreement with Nex-Tech Wireless to modernise rural mobile networks across Kansas.
The project targets around 85% of the operator’s RAN, or radio access network. This is the equipment layer that connects phones to the wider network. It also includes a cloud-native 5G standalone core.
In practical terms, the upgrade should improve speed, latency, and spectrum use. Lower latency means devices respond faster across the network. That matters for video, enterprise apps, connected agriculture, and public sector services.
The deal also includes Ericsson Radio System technology. It features the AI-capable RAN Processor 6655. Nex-Tech Wireless will also receive new 4G and 5G software capabilities.
However, this is more than a radio refresh. Ericsson will expand Nex-Tech Wireless’ existing dual-mode 5G Core deployment. The upgraded core will run on Ericsson’s Cloud Native Infrastructure Solution.
This architecture lets operators add services with more flexibility. It can also reduce the limits of older hardware-based systems. Yet cloud-native networks demand strong operational skills and careful migration planning.
Ericsson will also introduce its Telco DataOps Platform. The system will support the new 5G network. It will also help Nex-Tech Wireless manage billing and revenue across the core network.
That part of the deal deserves attention. Rural operators often face tough economics and wide coverage demands. Better data tools can help them understand traffic, services, and customer behaviour.
The agreement may also create a new revenue route. Nex-Tech Wireless plans to add network hosting capabilities. That could allow other mobile operators to use parts of its infrastructure.
This model could make rural infrastructure more financially attractive. It may also reduce duplication and improve regional mobile coverage. Still, hosting adds commercial and operational complexity for a regional carrier.

For telecom observers, the deal shows how rural networks are changing. Smaller operators want more than coverage upgrades. They want flexible platforms, stronger automation, and new wholesale options.
If delivered well, Kansas communities could see stronger mobile experiences. Nex-Tech Wireless could also gain a more scalable business foundation. The challenge will be turning advanced network capability into sustainable service growth.
