Ericsson and Telia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Sweden. The agreement targets early 6G development while extending today’s 5G network foundations.

The companies announced the partnership at Ericsson Studio in Stockholm. Ericsson CEO Per Narvinger and Telia CEO Patrik Hofbauer attended the event.

The work will explore new radio features, stronger security, wider coverage, and better performance. It will also connect universities, startups, businesses, and public bodies. That wider ecosystem could help Sweden shape future mobile standards early.

During the event, the partners showed an early wireless 6G demonstration. It used the upper 6 GHz frequency band. The test highlighted faster connections, higher capacity, and stronger upload performance.

These upgrades could matter for advanced AI services and real-time video. Better upload speeds will also support creators, enterprises, and connected devices. For engineers, this points toward more balanced mobile networks.

However, 6G remains at an early stage. Standards, spectrum rules, and commercial models still need time. Operators must also justify new investment after major 5G spending. That makes practical use cases very important.

A second demonstration showed mobile networks tracking drones. This area links to integrated sensing and communications. In simple terms, the network can both connect devices and sense movement nearby.

That capability could support airport safety, critical infrastructure, and public security. Yet it may also raise privacy and regulatory questions. Clear rules will help build trust around sensing features.

Patrick Johansson, Ericsson Head of Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “Sweden and the Nordic region have a proud tradition of being early adopters of mobility. Today’s announcement indicates our companies’ intention to continue that tradition. We look forward to working closely with Telia on the path to 6G.”

Anders Olsson, Head of Telia Sweden, added: “Our investments in robust, secure and comprehensive 5G networks serve as a natural stepping-stone towards the next generation of connectivity: 6G. We are now bringing together industry, academia and the public sector to ensure Sweden takes a leading role in 6G development, based on the needs of society and businesses, and to contribute to a more secure and competitive Sweden.”

The agreement positions Sweden as an early 6G testbed. It also shows how 5G evolution and 6G research will overlap. For telecom pioneers, that transition may define the next decade.
