NEC Innovates with AI for Enhanced 5G Network Performance

NEC, a leading Japanese technology firm, has unveiled a groundbreaking Radio Access Network (RAN) optimization tool, revolutionizing how remote-controlled devices, such as robots and automated guided vehicles (AGVs), maintain connection stability and performance within 5G networks. By harnessing advanced artificial intelligence (AI), NEC’s solution promises to deliver unparalleled improvements in both the performance and reliability of these critical devices.

Traditional 5G networks operate with static RAN parameters, which can limit their efficiency and responsiveness. NEC’s innovative approach uses AI to analyze the unique communication needs and radio quality challenges of each user terminal, enabling dynamic adjustments to ensure optimal connectivity. This AI-driven system can modify various network parameters, including the modulation and coding scheme, radio resource allocation, and maximum allowable delay, all while predicting and enhancing latency performance.

The importance of this technology cannot be overstated for the operation of robots and AGVs, which require stable and reliable connections to function effectively. Fluctuations in network performance can lead to operational disruptions, posing safety risks and reducing productivity. NEC’s solution addresses these challenges head-on, significantly reducing the likelihood of such disruptions.

In practical terms, NEC’s RAN optimization has shown remarkable results in simulations, reducing robot stoppages in factories and warehouses by an astounding 98 percent. Looking ahead, NEC plans to integrate this AI-driven optimization into its RAN intelligent controllers (RICs), aiming for real-world demonstrations by March 2025. These advancements align with O-RAN Alliance standards, facilitating easier implementation in existing networks.

This announcement is part of a trio of initiatives revealed by NEC as it gears up for the Mobile World Congress (MWC). In addition to the RAN optimization solution, NEC has introduced an AI that enables robots to navigate and manipulate objects in unstructured environments, a significant step towards enhancing robotic efficiency beyond human capabilities. Furthermore, NEC is expanding its enterprise network solutions through collaborations with industry leaders, including Adtran, Infinera, and Juniper Networks, to support the diverse digital transformation needs of businesses as they navigate the post-5G era.
