Ericsson and Oppo have sealed a multi-year cross-licensing patent agreement. This agreement encompasses patents related to cellular technologies, including 5G. Under this new arrangement, Oppo will make royalty payments to Ericsson. Beyond the financial aspects, the agreement fosters collaboration on various 5G projects such as device testing, customer engagements, and marketing initiatives.

“This important royalty bearing license agreement with Oppo allows Ericsson to further invest in fundamental communications technologies. The license confirms that the patent licensing industry works and is proof that a vast majority of license agreements are based on business negotiations. It also reflects the mutual respect for each other’s patent portfolio,” commented Christina Petersson, chief intellectual property officer at Ericsson. She further revealed that the company aims to grow its patent revenue with more 5G agreements and explore other areas like IoT and consumer electronics.

This deal indicates a positive trend in patent licensing negotiations, highlighting trust and collaboration between major players. The financial benefits of this agreement have already impacted Ericsson’s Q2 2024 results, adding to its substantial patent portfolio of over 60,000 patents.

In contrast, disruptions can occur when the balance is disturbed. Last year, Ericsson filed a lawsuit with a U.S. District Court alleging that Lenovo and its subsidiary Motorola Mobility violated 5G licensing terms in various regions. This follows the company’s settlement of a prolonged legal battle with Apple over iPhone-related and other patents in December.
