SoftBank Partners with OneWeb for Enhanced Satellite Communications

SoftBank has announced a partnership with Eutelsat’s OneWeb to enhance communication services in Japan. This agreement will integrate OneWeb’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity into SoftBank’s offerings for businesses and government agencies.

The multi-year deal aims to provide high-quality, secure, and reliable communications, especially in remote areas. By leveraging OneWeb’s satellite network, SoftBank plans to deliver services with guaranteed bandwidth and communication speeds. Initially focused on the Japanese market, there is potential for expansion to Japanese customers abroad.

SoftBank’s SmartVPN service, a closed network solution, will benefit directly from this integration. It will improve connectivity in areas where traditional networks struggle, such as maritime and mountainous regions.

This partnership follows SoftBank’s recent approval from Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for a comprehensive license covering various radio stations, including VSAT and mobile earth stations. Eutelsat OneWeb also received a gateway station license, further solidifying the collaboration.

Cyril Dujardin, Co-President of Eutelsat’s Connectivity Business Unit, emphasized the significance of this partnership. He stated, “Our collaboration with SoftBank marks a significant step in delivering innovative connectivity solutions globally, particularly in Japan.”

Masakatsu Kawahara, SoftBank Corp.’s Vice President, highlighted the potential for digital transformation in various industries and local governments. The advanced satellite communication technology will enable secure, ubiquitous connectivity services across the country.

Eutelsat’s OneWeb has been actively expanding its global presence. It recently secured agreements with operators like MTN’s Bayobab in Africa and Australian operator Telstra for remote site connectivity. These partnerships underscore the growing demand for LEO satellite services in enhancing global communications infrastructure.
