The FCC is preparing another major spectrum move for satellite services. The agency plans a September 30 vote on new rules. These rules could open more than 1,000MHz in the 12GHz and 42GHz bands.
The main target is stronger satellite broadband for homes, aircraft, and ships. Faster links could help remote users and mobile operators. They could also support resilient backup routes during outages.
However, spectrum never arrives without trade-offs. The 42GHz band already attracts interest from terrestrial operators. T-Mobile and Charter Communications have studied it for spectrum sharing. That means regulators must balance satellite growth with ground-based wireless plans.
The 12GHz band has also drawn long debate. In 2025, Brendan Carr called 12GHz “underused due to restrictions on satellite services.” His view reflects a broader FCC push. The agency wants higher use from valuable airwaves.
Beyond those bands, the FCC may seek more capacity elsewhere. It is studying up to 1,459MHz in Ku- and Ka-band spectrum. It also cites 138.25GHz in the D-band. These very high frequencies could support advanced satellite links and spacecraft control.
At the same time, the agency wants to update unlicensed ultra-wideband rules. UWB already supports key fobs, smart locks, and vehicle safety tools. It uses short-range radio signals with accurate location features. The FCC now wants room for new device categories.
That change matters for AI-enabled sensing. In simple terms, sensing lets devices detect motion, distance, or presence. AI can then interpret those signals. This could support safer vehicles, smarter homes, and industrial automation.
Yet the update may raise questions about interference. UWB can share bands well when devices follow strict limits. More device types could make testing and certification more important. Vendors will need clear and stable rules.
The debate also reaches future mobile networks. AI-based sensing has become part of early 6G discussions. Meanwhile, the FCC continues preparing auctions for 5G and later systems. Upper C-band activity remains a key part of that roadmap.
Finally, the FCC also wants permitting reform. It plans changes tied to NEPA environmental reviews. The agency argues faster reviews could accelerate broadband deployment. It says many wireless builds would avoid current checklist delays.
Still, faster permitting can invite scrutiny. Communities may want confidence that tower and network builds receive proper oversight. The challenge is speed without losing trust.
For telecom professionals, the message is clear. Satellite, mobile, IoT, and AI sensing now compete for the same strategic asset. Spectrum policy will shape the next decade of connectivity.
