CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent full-fibre provider, has taken a strategic step by selling its ISP subsidiary, Lit Fibre, back to co-founders Tom Williams and Ben Bresler. Initially acquired by CityFibre in May 2024, Lit Fibre was part of CityFibre’s plan to enhance its network’s reach, ultimately targeting 300,000 more premises onto its extensive 10Gbps network by the end of the year. Despite this ambition, CityFibre has decided to divest this consumer service arm, reflecting a stronger focus on its core function as a wholesaler.
This decision is driven by CityFibre’s strategic commitment to becoming the wholesale provider of choice. Their network enables partners to access leading products, pricing, and services, thereby offering consumers more ISP choices. CityFibre CEO, Greg Mesch, stated, “We are really pleased to see Lit Fibre continue with its co-founders, who are passionate about the business, and we look forward to continuing to partner with Lit Fibre across our network.”
In addition, CityFibre continues to broaden its digital infrastructure capabilities — aiming at potential acquisition opportunities — ultimately aspiring to extend its reach to at least 8 million UK premises. Even as the company concentrates on further developing its extensive full-fibre network, the sale of Lit Fibre remains consistent with its wholesale-driven strategic roadmap. The disposal allows CityFibre to streamline its operations, focusing more on enhancing its infrastructure and connectivity offerings.
On the flip side, Tom Williams and Ben Bresler regain the reins of Lit Fibre, enabling more focused business operations and customer engagement. This transition promises continuity in customer service as the customers will be unaffected by this change of ownership.
