Nokia is teaming up with Hrvatski Telekom (HT), Croatia’s largest telecom operator, to open up 5G functions to app developers. This collaboration will utilize Nokia’s Network as Code platform to allow developers to monetize HT’s 5G capabilities through application programming interfaces (APIs). This initiative aims to boost high-value consumer, enterprise, and industrial applications.
Through this collaboration, LTE/4G network capabilities are also being made accessible, with APIs offering standardized network function access. This approach eliminates the need to navigate complex network technologies. Twenty-seven companies worldwide, including network operators like BT and Telefonica, utilize Nokia’s platform. Other users include hyperscalers like Google Cloud and communications platform as a service (CPaaS) providers.
Nokia’s platform provides 5G capabilities such as quality-of-service on-demand, network insights, and device location through software development kits (SDKs). Cloud communications provider Infobip and teledriving technology provider Elmo are pivotal in this operation. Infobip’s CPaaS platform offers APIs for real-time omnichannel communications, while Elmo employs APIs for cross-border tele-driving tech in Europe.
HT, a part of Deutsche Telekom Group, has been progressive among regional European operators. In a recent venture with APM Terminals and ENNA Group, HT provided a ‘private’ slice of its public 5G network for their joint development at Port of Rijeka, poised to become Croatia’s largest port.
During the pilot projects, HT collaborates with Nokia and other partners to explore new opportunities arising from integrating 5G network capabilities. The chief technology officer of HT stated that ensuring high-performing networks is crucial for developers to create groundbreaking applications globally.
