Indian state-run operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has moved forward with its plans to introduce 5G services by launching a tender for implementing 5G infrastructure in New Delhi, according to recent local reports. The tender invites proposals from network providers and equipment manufacturers to establish a 5G network using Standalone (SA) architecture at 1,876 locations, catering to 100,000 registered users. This initiative also includes the introduction of fixed wireless access (FWA) broadband services.
BSNL’s strategy involves utilizing the 900 MHz and 3.3GHz frequency bands to provide 5G SA connectivity in New Delhi. The chosen bidders will be tasked with the comprehensive planning, design, equipment supply, deployment, and management of the 5G network. This bold move aligns with BSNL’s vision to enhance its digital presence across the region.
Two service providers will play pivotal roles in this rollout: a primary 5G as a Service (5GaaS) provider for establishing one 5G SA core network and a Radio Access Network (RAN) with equipment from up to two original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and a secondary provider for additional 5G-RAN installations, also limited to two OEMs. The 5GaaS provider will be responsible for all capital and operational expenses associated with the 5G SA core and RAN equipment. Structural modifications required on existing towers for new 5G antennas also fall under the selected bidder’s obligations.
Monetary compensation for the providers will be based on the generated revenue from both FWA and 5G mobile services, according to BSNL. Previously, the company initiated 5G technology testing at three key locations in New Delhi.
This tender signifies BSNL’s commitment to advancing its network capabilities and addressing competition from telcos like Reliance Jio Infocomm and Bharti Airtel. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed that services will launch in 2025, following successful trials. Additionally, the company plans to have 100,000 4G sites nationwide by mid-2025, many of which will transition to 5G over time.
BSNL has already deployed 36,000 4G sites and aims to capture 20% of the mobile market by the end of 2024, with ambitions to increase this share to 25% by 2025. This initiative is crucial for gaining a competitive edge over rivals and enhancing its market presence. Collaborative efforts with the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and the Tata Group highlight the strategic partnerships forming the backbone of this endeavor.
