Telstra and Starlink Trial Satellite Texting in Australia

Telstra has teamed up with Starlink, SpaceX’s ambitious satellite network, to pioneer Satellite-to-Mobile text messaging in Australia. This collaboration aims to address the notable gaps in mobile coverage, particularly in remote areas underserved by traditional infrastructure. The partners have set their sights on testing this capability under Australian conditions before rolling out commercially.

While Telstra has an impressive network, covering 99.7% of the population, the geographical vastness of Australia presents unique connectivity challenges. As Shailin Sehgal, Telstra’s Group Executive for Global Networks and Tech, pointed out, “Australia’s landmass is vast, and there will always be large areas where mobile and fixed networks do not reach. This is where satellite technology will play a complementary role to our existing networks.”

Initially, the service will support text messaging, with the future possibility of expanding to include voice and low-rate data services. This trial builds on a 2023 partnership between Telstra and Starlink which focused on bringing fixed broadband and voice services to remote areas. With this earlier collaboration, Telstra aimed to provide broadband speeds far superior to older systems, combined with local technical support and optional professional installation to ensure easier adoption.

This move by Telstra and Starlink could redefine rural connectivity models by leveraging the potential of satellite technology to bridge network voids. However, implementing Satellite-to-Mobile services presents challenges, such as ensuring seamless integration with existing networks and managing the cost implications of new technology.
