Ooredoo has made a significant move in the telecommunications sector with the launch of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) largest submarine cable, connecting seven Middle Eastern countries. Partnering with Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), the cable will serve Qatar, Oman, UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. Although the exact length of this undersea marvel is undisclosed, its capabilities are ambitious. With a potential capacity of up to 720Tbps and 24 fiber pairs, this project promises enhanced connectivity and speed for the region.
Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo, Group CEO of Ooredoo, expressed the strategic alignment with the company’s vision to expand its network capacity and interconnectivity. Alain Biston, CEO at ASN, emphasized the transformative nature of the project, stating, “this state-of-the-art infrastructure will reliably deliver exceptional capacity and connectivity, empowering the region’s digital transformation ambitions.”
The benefits of this infrastructure are manifold. It will provide a faster and more secure connection to Europe, aiding hyperscalers, businesses, and governments by improving network reliability. Telecom operators and data centers will also appreciate the boost in security and speeds. Furthermore, AI providers can leverage the robust infrastructure to enhance their solutions.
As they prepare for the Submarine Networks EMEA event, ASN’s presence highlights their prominence in the subsea cable domain. Such initiatives not only showcase ASN’s technological capabilities but also open avenues for collaboration and networking in the telecommunications sector.
